Bible verses for depression and deep sadness

Some days, getting out of bed is already a victory. The Bible does not hide this place: the psalms were written by people who cried all night. Read slowly. You are not alone, and this day is not the end of your story.

If the sadness does not go away or you think about hurting yourself, reach out today: talk to a doctor or a therapist, or call your local crisis line (988 in the United States). Asking for help is also an act of faith.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those whose spirit is crushed.”

Psalm 34:18

“Why are you so downcast, my soul? Hope in God, for I will praise him again.”

Psalm 42:11

“I waited patiently for the Lord, and he heard me. He lifted me out of the pit and set my feet on a rock.”

Psalm 40:1-2

“Weeping may stay for the whole night, but joy arrives with the morning.”

Psalm 30:5

“He will not break a bruised reed or put out a wick that is still smoldering.”

Isaiah 42:3

How to use these verses

Pick just one and read it slowly, two or three times. Write down the word that caught your attention and come back to it during the day. If someone came to mind while you were reading, send the verse to that person: it is often exactly what they needed to hear today.
